Indonesia is an enormously big country, stretching over three time zones and consisting of 17.507 islands, of which more than 6000 are inhabited. 220 million people live in Indonesia and about 87% are Moslem.

Cooperation between NHO and APINDO (The Employer’s association of Indonesia) began in the late 1990’s after a proposition by APINDO.

Formal relations were introduced in November 2002 when both parties confirmed their interest in cooperating and when the Norwegian embassy in Jakarta and the ILO through its representative in Indonesia were positive to such a cooperation project.

In April 2003 representatives from the APINDO board were invited to Oslo to discuss the contents of a possible agreement on cooperation. A Letter of Intent with the following main points was signed:

  • Development seminars for APINDO’s employees, centrally and regionally are to be held. Main focus on competence building and means of cooperation with the Government, member companies and trade unions. The aim being to strengthen APINDO as an Employer Organisation.
  • Employer – Employee relations (Bilateral)
  • Development seminars for Women Entrepreneurs with focus on Marketing and Business Development.
  • Seminars concerning Occupational Safety and Health, including HIV and AIDS.
  • Seminars concerning Corporate Social Responsibility.

Later the work of recruiting and educating Jurymen for the Indonesian Labour court (established in January 2006)  became an important part of the cooperation.

The cooperation agreement has been extended to 2014 and will largely follow the guidelines given in the Letter of Intent.
