Uganda

Uganda is one of Norway’s five main cooperation countries in Africa. NHO’s cooperation with its sister organization in Uganda, Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE), has been active since 1997. FUE is the country’s leading employer organization and has, through cooperation on capacity building with NHO, developed into a good organization with direct access to and influence on government on behalf of its members. NHO's development cooperation with FUE is contributing to the development of Democracy in Uganda.

When the Cooperating Discussions started, FUE had a shrinking member mass. After the cooperation began the organization has been growing when it comes to members and representation outside Kampala.

The cooperation between NHO and FUE is focused on active member recruiting, capacity building of the secretariat, strengthening the enterprise advisory unit of FUE, Labour relations, Occupational safety and Health in the construction sector, awareness about Corporate Social Responsibility and Good Governance.

From the establishment of FUE in 1958 the organisation has been hiring premises for its secretariat. In 2007 FUE has started the construction of its own building in the outskirts out of Kampala city. This proves that FUE has been a stronger organisation also economically. The member companies and sector federations within FUE among others have contributed to the financing of the building.

Private Sector Development

Another big and important cooperation between NHO and FUE is linked to Private Sector Development in the south (NIS). On behalf of Norad, NHO performed a study in late 2002 which would serve as a foundation for possible business cooperation between Norwegian and Ugandan enterprises.
Following this study, a number of Norwegian and Ugandan companies have been assisted by NHO in developing cooperation in different sectors. The more important are the Power sector, fish farming, forest planting, agriculture, house building, healthcare measures and last, but not least trade. Trade related cooperation is handled by the Federation of Norwegian Commercial- and Service Enterprises (HSH).
